Congenital and Inherited Disorders

Newborn Screening Program
Congenital and Inherited Disorders

The purpose of the Nevada Congenital and Inherited Disorders Screening Program is to screen every child in the state for a range of diseases and to ensure necessary interventions when a child is discovered to have a disorder.

Many disorders screened for cannot be seen in the newborn, but can cause serious physical or mental problems and in some cases, death. For this reason it is vital that all babies be screened at birth. Currently Nevada screens for over 30 conditions which include metabolic disorders, endocrine disorders, hematological disorders, and cystic fibrosis. The Nevada Congenital and Inherited Disorders Screening Program is part of the Northwest Regional Newborn Screening Program.
