Kicking the Habit

READY TO QUIT?

Here are some tips that have helped many people.

Set a quit date.

Prepare.

  • Write down why you want to quit.

  • Find out what triggers your urges.

  • Remove cigarettes and ashtrays from your home and car.

Tackle stress.

  • Take time to relax.

  • Find new ways to reward yourself.

Build a support system.

  • Tell friends and family about your decision to quit and ask them for help.

  • Locate a co-worker or friend who also wants to quit so that you have a 'quitting buddy.'

  • Talk to your heath care provider.

  • Call the Nevada Tobacco Users' Helpline toll free at 1-800-QUITNOW (1-800-784-8669) or in Las Vegas call 702-877-0684

Check with your doctor or pharmacist for recommendations on nicotine replacement therapy. Different methods are right for different people. Some medications are available over-the-counter and others require a prescription. Most people who try to stop smoking can benefit greatly from medication.
