Plague Warning - General
Information and Precautions |
 |
Chipmunks, ground squirrels, or other
wild rodents in the northern Nevada area may be infected
with plague. Plague can be transmitted to humans by the bite
of an infected flea or by handling an infected animal. |
|
Use These Precautions |
- See a physician if you become ill
within seven days of your visit to the northern Nevada area.
Early symptoms include: Malaise (feeling of illness), high
fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, and often swollen,
painful lymph glands. Inform the physician about your
travels. THE DISEASE IS CURABLE WHEN DIAGNOSED EARLY.
- Protect pets with flea powder or
flea collars. Keep pets confined or on a leash. It is better
to LEAVE PETS HOME.
- AVOID ANIMAL FLEAS. Do not camp,
rest, or sleep near animal burrows. Insect repellent sprayed
on socks and trouser cuffs may help.
- Avoid all contact with chipmunks,
squirrels, or other wild animals. DO NOT FEED.
- DO NOT TOUCH sick or dead animals.
